colophon
This website is a digital artifact, and it is built like one: plain hypertext and a single stylesheet, no framework, no database, no tracking. The pages are generated from plain text on my own machine and served as flat files — nothing runs when you visit but the page itself. The home page is about 30 kb of markup and style. The photographs weigh more, because they are the point.
Images
The photographs are progressive JPEGs: each file arrives in passes, coarse to fine, the way images arrived when connections were slow. The conversion is lossless — the pixels and the EXIF are exactly what the cameras wrote. Every image is captioned with its own filename and the settings it was made with, read off the file itself.

All color here is sRGB — a default written in 1996 so that monitors could disagree less. Nearly every digital image you have ever seen lives inside it. That, too, is a choice, made mostly by nobody.

Surface
The grain is an SVG turbulence filter, computed in your browser while you look at it. It belongs to the chrome and is never laid over a photograph. Empty frames hold a field of noise, and the photographs resolve out of it, coarse to fine. Nothing here is a picture of an effect; everything is the effect itself.
